The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars have an inspirational story that has been told all over the world through their music and a documentary made about their experience during a grueling war, their lives in a refugee camp, and their way through music to overcome their hardship. Sitting down with them before their show at Brooklyn’s the Bell House in Gowanus, we had a chance to talk about the impact of the documentary, how music affects change, and where they are going in the future.
As they have begun work on the next Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars album with help on the production side from Victor Axelrod of Antibalas, lead singer Reuben M. Koroma noted, “I think Victor [Axelrod] is going to produce our best record yet,” with Black Nature nodding vigorously in agreement.
