Feature Media: Medeski, Martin, & Wood “Doppler”

Famed trio Medeski, Martin, and Wood have announced the release of a new album entitled Free Magic due out September 25, 2012 on the band’s label Indirecto Records. The recordings document their first-ever acoustic tour which took place in 2007.

“There’s a rhythmic and sonic connection that we have,” says Martin of his MMW colleagues. “Listening is the most important thing for us. We’re having a conversation when we’re playing. The dynamic range is much greater in the acoustic setting. When we play electric, everything is turned up to 11 and it’s screaming. But with John on piano and Chris on upright, we can play with a much more nuanced touch. It’s a very different world and I love it.”

John Medeski is also an accomplished organist. Check him out laying down some fire with Martin and Wood on “After the Onsen.”

Thanks for breaking the news, but MMW has been on several acoustic tours prior to 2007. They actually have a mind altering live album from 1999 called “Tonic” that I highly recommend.

“For its latest effort, MMW dip into their archives to present a collection of recordings documenting their first-ever acoustic tour in 2007.” – from their press release. We were thinking it was their first entirely acoustic tour as they have indeed recorded acoustic gigs before. If you have any more info into this, it would be much appreciated!
