Now in the 21st century, and a mere six years since Sundiata’s passing, Harris and others are recreating that seminal moment at the world famous Apollo Theater, a place where the writer performed and cemented his revered legacy frequently during his career. Tongues of Fire Choir is just one of many programs that’s a part of Blink Your Eyes: Sekou Sundiata Revisited, a year-long tribute to Sundiata happening in various venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Wilbur “Bad” Bascomb left his mark during ’70s in what can be described as a career conglomeration of jazz, funk, and soul. Bascomb is known for laying down thick lines for everyone from Lou Donaldson and Roy Ayers to Chuck Berry and Jeff Beck. Gasface’s “Talkin’ All That Jazz” recently caught up with “Bad” for a discussion on how electronic music would change the game for musicians.

Wax Poetics is taking over Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s new dinner and music venue, Ginny’s Supper Club, for a night in honor of the “first lady of the flute,” Bobbi Humphry. Opening up the shows will be the great Christian Scott (check out Christian aTunde Adjuah) and Janka Nabay, a mainstay of the Bubu music from Sierra Leone. Then Ms. Humphry herself will take to the stage for two sets to once again prove why she is the “first lady of the flute” for two lucky audiences.
