Fresh off of her Grammy-award winning ‘Mosaic Project,’ Terri Lyne Carrington went straight back into the studio to create another project of equal quality and substance. ‘Money Jungle’ was originally recorded in 1962 by Duke Ellington, Max Roach, and Charles Mingus. Just over 50 years later Carrington brings back the raw tension evoked by Ellington, Roach, and Mingus with her own trio filled out by Christian McBride and Gerald Clayton and featuring additional guests Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Tia Fuller, and more. Check out what Carrington had to say about the record before you see her perform it at Dizzy’s this week!

Life holds many interests and many routes to get to many different places. For vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles, the duality of her interests –music, sociology, sports, politics — has begun to inform her songwriting and artistry to the point where she has become something very special and intriguing. Her music is informed by her social interactions and thus by extension society. Whether it is a selection from the Kern songbook or a one from his own pages, Clayton is able to inject a part of himself into the music. With every note, we are privy to something very personal, something unique and above all something refreshing. This is the defining characteristic of Clayton’s most recent effort. Like our own human potential, its boundaries are paradoxically limitless. Several months from now, when we are looking back at the year’s best albums, I expect that we will be discussing Gerald Clayton’s sophomore project, Bond: The Paris Sessions.

Atlanta is another urban hotbed for jazz music, and this Memorial Day Weekend from May 28th-May 30th, Piedmont Park will be bustling with a diverse pool of jazz performers offering up their talents to the citizens of Atlanta. In 1977 Mayor Jackson had a desire to transform Atlanta into the center of jazz music as far as the South was concerned, and through his determination, tenacity, and a shared vision with some of the great local politicians and community organizers of Atlanta, put on the first year of the Atlanta Jazz Festival. 34 years later, and with secure funding, and loyal participants, the 2011 Atlanta Jazz Festival will be more nuanced and dynamic than ever, featuring acts like Warren Wolf, Gerald Clayton, and Regina Carter and many others.
