Philip Dizack: Completely Universal

Music has been on Philip Dizack’s mind since he was just a kid. “When I was twelve, I just knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” With his Truth Revolution Records debut, End of An Era, Dizack has brought together two amazing sets of musicians (Justin Brown, Sam Harris, Joe Saylor & Linda Oh, Kendrick Scott, Aaron Parks) to bring his concepts of life, love, and loss into perspective for our ears. The music is stunningly engaging, beautifully composed, and masterfully performed. Check out what Dizack had to say about the record and his thought process for the music.

Gerald Clayton Bond: The Paris Sessions

Whether it is a selection from the Kern songbook or a one from his own pages, Clayton is able to inject a part of himself into the music. With every note, we are privy to something very personal, something unique and above all something refreshing. This is the defining characteristic of Clayton’s most recent effort. Like our own human potential, its boundaries are paradoxically limitless. Several months from now, when we are looking back at the year’s best albums, I expect that we will be discussing Gerald Clayton’s sophomore project, Bond: The Paris Sessions.
Ambrose Akinmusire at the Jazz Standard

For many reasons, Ambrose Akinmusire has received high, widespread praise for his debut on Blue Note Records, When the Heart Emerges Glistening. The title alone suggests that the album’s contents are more than a collection of swinging tunes. To hear the stories behind each song, and the album as a whole, it’s clear that Akinmusire is doing more than fancily tooting a horn.
